Where has the good food gone?

Okay, day two of the new Contagion. What has gone down so far?

1) Shopping for food that has no fat, low sodium and is something I want to eat is difficult.

2) Day two of no caffeine and I’m ready to kill people. I can’t drink any colored soft drinks, anything with caffeine or anything with sugar. That leaves me with water, unless I want to drink whisky all day, which I may just start doing. All I’ve had to drink over the last two days is water and 24 oz of beer. The water at work tastes like morning breath.

3) For the first time in my life I poured perfectly good beer down the drain. It wasn’t even a beer I hated, but beer I really liked. Why? Because I was past my two beer limit and the bottle couldn’t be resealed.

4) Want to know why Americans are fat? It’s because “healthy”, “good for you” foods are almost twice as expensive as regular food. Think I’m kidding; go shopping for “healthy” lunch meats and breads. The other reason is that the amount of time it takes to turn something “healthy” into something palatable takes forever and it still doesn’t taste as good as a bacon cheeseburger and fries that only take 15 minutes to cook. It took me 1.5 hours to cook last night’s dinner and I still would have rather had the burger and fries.

5) If one more person mistakes why I’m eating “healthier” for me going on a diet, I’m going to reach down their throat and rip out a chunk of their lower intestine. If it was up to me, I’d still be eating and drinking the same stuff. It’s because I’m trying to keep my insides from jellifying that I’ve changed my eating habits.

So there you have it. Now you’ll excuse me while I go eat some baby carrots and cucumber slices.

I feel so sorry for you cause I have been there, done that, have the t-shirt.

That no caffene thing just sucks, can't have it either. What about Diet and no caffene stuff? Or crystal lite? Adding lemon or lime to water helps alot.

I would have to go with liquified insides if they wanted me to give up my caffeine... they can have everything else - but not my caffeine. Otherwise the ensuing migraine would kill me. I do all "real food" I know exactly how expensive and time consuming it is.

If you want any tips on faster meals let me know I've been doing this for a while - although I'm not tremendously LOW FAT - I'm low sodium because I don't do prepackaged and I use little salt anyway. heh. Good tip - use olive oil for your cooking fat - it's unsaturated and it doesn't have "trans fats" and it tastes wonderful. And yes you do need at least 40 grams of fat per day in order to absorb fat soluble vitamins. Otherwise you come down with some horrid symptoms.

I'm livin' your life, my friend. I completely get it and it totally sucks. I also found that eating fruits and nuts with protein, makes me have to eat more. I frickin' have to have those carbs. Finding them that are low fat and mostly dairy free has been a bit of a bitch. But I have to eat them or I'm hungry every 30 minutes.

It can be a total PITPT to eat healthy foods. Basically you have to make everything. Processed foods are almost completely out, because they put so much crap in that stuff. But it's worth it if it fixes whatever is wrong.

And are you allowed to have sugar at all? Refined sugar is awful, but will they let you have pure cane sugar (also called raw turbinado sugar)? If so, there are some really good natural sodas (no coloring, pure cane sugar, no caffeine) at the health food stores like Wild Oats and Whole Foods.
