Flooding Rockford. Update: 14:10

Just a quick update. We have no power at home, and we are flooded. There is about 8-12 inches of water in our basement. Apparently the city of Rockford and the incompetence of it’s elected officials did not learn a lesson from last year’s Labor Day flooding.

There is supposed to be more rain today so I’m not sure if the water is going to be rising or not, but if it does we could be in a lot of trouble.

UPDATE 11:56: Power came back on about an hour and a half ago. I've spent the last hour draining the basement of about 4 inches of water. I rigged a pump to do the work for me. The problem is that I'm still getting some water rising up through the storm drain in the floor. Mental note: Cap and seal storm drain after this is over.

There are helicopters flying around surveying damage. The fire and rescue crews are on the scene pulling people out of the houses by boat. The have issued a warning in our area asking for a voluntary evacuation just in case the damn breaks. However the Army Corp of Engineers are saying it isn't that bad and as long as we don't get another down pour we should be fine.

Update 14:10: The basement is pretty much dry. All the water is gone, the humidifiers are doing their thing and I've bleached the area for all that it's worth for right now. I'll go back and do more disinfecting later once it's all dry.

Yeah, going under that train bridge by your house was REAL fun last night at 1:30am lemme tell ya. Had to be at least a foot and a half deep. I almost got washed off the road six times on the way home.

Hope you learned a thing or two from it last year.

That just sucks and I think you should go to the city hall and make them learn a thing or two about flooding.

Oh man! I am so sorry! Having lived through several such flooding problems in our old house - I know exactly what you're going through. Get your call in to Service Master (or whoever you use) right now so you're near the top of the list to get them in and do the disinfecting after the water has receded. *sigh*

Sorry to hear that! Hope you don't get anymore water down there.

How terrible! Water creates such a nasty mess. With population increase we tend to create concrete cities; more streets, parking lots, shopping malls etc. Resulting in no place for water absorption. The drainage plans never seem adequate. Hope all will be fixed soon.

Oh Jeez - I have been hoping that y'all were happy and dry... Hang in there!

Don't cap the drain, make a standpipe to fit it. Screw in the standpipe, and the water comes several inches (or feet) up the standpipe, without flooding the basement.

Glad you're ok. I understand that whole basement/water dynamic and do not envy you one iota.
